The report from our consultants (Hydreau) assesses the feasibility of constructing a c.10,000m³ irrigation reservoir at RPGC to secure a more reliable water supply. It confirms that both proposed sites (near the 4th and 14th holes) are technically viable, with suitable geology and soils, though the 4th hole site may require additional drainage.
The existing abstraction licence from Rothley Brook is limited but could likely be expanded, with the Environment Agency expected to support increased winter abstraction (up to ~18,000m³ annually) subject to flow conditions. Alternative sources such as a borehole are unlikely to provide significant benefit.
Environmental, planning, and engineering constraints are considered manageable, with no major barriers identified, although ecological surveys (e.g. bats, great crested newts) and archaeological assessments will be required. Concept designs indicate that a lined reservoir will be necessary.
The site near the 14th hole is generally preferred due to its elevation and reduced drainage requirements.
In conclusion, Hydreau states that the construction of a reservoir at Rothley Park Golf Club is feasible and practical, with no significant technical or planning constraints. Progression of the scheme is recommended, particularly focusing on the 14th hole location, alongside early engagement with the Environment Agency and completion of necessary surveys to support planning and licensing approvals.
