Hames Rosebowl 6th June

History

John and Harry Hames
John Hames, born in 1858 and his brother Harry Hames, born in 1862 were both founder members
of the club. It was John Hames who supported Frederick Merttens in their representations to have a
station installed in Rothley.
The Hames brothers owned a very successful Hosiery business from their factory in Fowke Street,
just opposite the Grange, in Rothley. In 1929 Harry Hames built two cottages on School Street and
three cottages on Woodgate for the use of his family and subsequently for retired hosiery workers. In
1960 the Harry Hames Cottage Charity was established and to this day the cottages are rented out
and the surplus income is invested in local projects such as the Wall of Remembrance in Rothley Cemetary..
Harry Hames was a member of the first Golf Club Council appointed on the 13th August 1911
